THAT WRETCHED CANTANKEROUS DOOR

Updated: Aug 1, 2019

The original door in the van was very narrow and was also badly hail damaged, so we opted to replace it, especially when we had been offered this second hand door for a bargain price from a guy who had it laying around his yard, minus its lock. So luckily we were naive and had never done anything like this before, or we would have left it in his yard.

After pulling the door entirely to bits, it soon became evident that it had been in an accident and was slightly warped. Anyway we were not deterred, after all we had just paid money for this. We soon learnt that to find a replacement lock, was nigh impossible and if you did, you couldn't afford one. Catch 22!

Check out the slideshow below to get an idea of what we were dealing with.

Carl had to remanufacture a missing part at the top of the door and then every single piece was stripped off the door, hung on a frame, ready for Chris to spray every part. Of course with a lovely new spray job of 2 pac paint, it looked like brand new again, apart from the missing handle and locking mechanism.

We opted to remove the aluminium mesh screen as we thought it dated the door and van.

The original damaged door had tinted moulded perspex in it, which had a big crack in it, so we replaced it with this sheet of perspex from Bunnings. It's great, let's light in, but you can't see it.

Like NEW again.Yay!
